CO Awareness

We are a new group in Halton setting up to raise awareness of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning also known by the name the silent killer and its effects. We aim to inform and educate the health professionals and the general public about the symptoms and treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning. We are trying to establish a local support group for anyone affected by CO their families, friends or even health professionals.

Carbon Monoxide Poison.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas which can be emitted from any heating or cooking appliance, petrol generator, or vehicle engine or indeed any appliance powered by combustible fuel e.g. gas (mains or bottled), solid fuel (coal, wood, etc.) petrol, oil, paraffin. CO is formed when a combustible fuel doesn't burn properly.
A survey by the Consumer Unit of the DTI, dated 1995, showed that on average 50 people die per year from Carbon Monoxide poisoning from domestic heating appliances. We at CO Awareness believe this figure to be much higher as Carbon Monoxide poisoning is often misdiagnosed. Those who survive often suffer long term ill health.
You can't see it, taste it or smell it, but CO can kill without warning within a few hours and in extreme cases in minutes.

Symptoms of CO poisoning can include tiredness, drowsiness, headaches, giddiness, nausea, vomiting, pains in the chest, breathlessness, stomach pains, erratic behaviour and visual problems. These symptoms can mimic many common ailments and may easily be confused with flu, or simple tiredness, or even depression.

The new charity is looking for members and soon hopes to hold its first meeting.
